RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES
Partner with the Sustainable Favela Network
At COP28, a Declaration for Climate Change and Education was launched and signed by
39 countries to help countries adapt, mitigate, and invest in climate change adaptation
and resilience (The Declaration, 2024). To create an effective education campaign, UmRio
will need to leverage existing resources, and a valuable and essential resource to get
started could be the Sustainable Favela Network (www.favelasustentavel.org). The
Sustainable Favela Network has more than 195 community organizers representing 127
favelas and communities in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Rede Favela Sustentável, 2012).
They are working to promote climate justice and develop favelas into models of
sustainable communities. In 2023, they hosted a “COP of the Favelas” because, as one
participant stated, “COP is an event in which the people who suffer the most from climate
change don’t participate. This gave rise to the idea of creating COP of the Favelas because
favelas are the communities that suffer the most from environmental racism and climate
change” (Tavares, 2023).
Given that the Sustainable Favela Network has
existing education programs within areas linked
to creating climate change resilience and justice
for favela residents, this first step should be to
join their network and partner to create an
official climate change resilience program that
incorporates the existing research and
education that the Sustainable Favela Network is
currently providing. UmRio’s Climate Change
Resilience Coordinator could aid in packaging
the existing information and programs to create A youth leader arriving at the COP of
a curriculum for UmRio’s kids in the after-school the Favelas event in 2023 (Tavares,
programs and Morro do Castro residents. 2023). Photo: Bárbara Dias
