RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES


             The  total  costs,  around  $1000-$2000  reais
             ($200-400 USD) including labor and $400-$800
             reais ($80-160 USD)  without labor will be out
             of reach for families that live on approximately
             USD  1  per  day  so  private  donations  or
             government funding will be critical to scale the
             project and enhance the overall effects of the
             green  roofs  to  reduce  the  temperatures  and
             improve  drainage  in  Morro  do  Castro  (Teto
             Verde  Favela,  2021).  Teto  Verde  Favela  is

             available  to  provide  training  and  installation
             workshops  and  guidance  as  part  of  their
             overall mission, so those costs will not need to
             be  covered,  though,  as  they  are  a  non-profit;

                Favela Economic Benefits:

                       Reduced stormwater runoff by up to 65% and delay of flow rate by up to three
                       hours.  This  saves  the  community  and  residents  from  the  financial  costs
                       associated with flooding and water damage (Tassi et al., 2014)

                       Reduced energy use or needs in the home through shade provided, insulation,
                       and the cooling aspect of green roofs. (2014)

                       Green roofs last twice as long as traditional ones if appropriately maintained.

                       Provides  job  training  and  employment  for  individuals  who  wish  to  learn  to
                       install and maintain green roofs.




                Health and Other Benefits:
                       Provide biodiversity and habitats in areas typically dominated by concrete and
                       asphalt. (Shafique et al., 2018)

                       Reduces  the  effects  of  urban  heat  islands,  which  can  cause  heat-related
                       illnesses, death, and air pollution. (2018)

                       Creation of job opportunities for favela residents. (2018)

                       Provides a community project in which residents can engage together

                       Solves immediate need to reduce temperatures in homes and communities
                       due to extreme heat.
