RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES

Sources for funding for the green roof project
could include the city of Niterói and specifically
from an existing program called “Carbon
             Emissions Reductions Payment for Favela
Residents” (“Prefeitura de Niterói,” 2023). Since
Morro do Castro is located in two
municipalities, there is an opportunity to take
advantage of the relationship with the Climate
Municipal Secretary for the city of Niterói,
which is more progressive than São Gonçalo

(though only 20% of Morro do Castro lies
within the technical boundary of Niterói). This
position was created in 2023, and this person is
             responsible for preventing and mitigating
damages related to climate change in the
Aerial photo of the founder of Teto
municipality of Niterói. Verde Favela’s home. His home was up

to 40 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than

the City’s Social Carbon Neutralization Program
             (“Prefeitura de Niterói,” 2023).

The program focuses on vulnerable areas of the city and aims to bring awareness and
climate education to residents. The program establishes a Municipal Community
Carbon Credit (CCCM), titled Climate Currency (MDC), which functions as a virtual
monetary credit linked to reaching CO2 reduction targets established for the
households involved with the project. The idea is that each family tries to reduce

carbon emissions through changes in energy consumption, transportation, and
recycling for 10% of needed emissions reductions. The other 90% are targeted to be
reduced through green planting and reforestation. Families that manage to reduce CO2
emissions between 2% and 12.9% will be compensated with a monthly payment of up
to R$750 (USD 150). UmRio should immediately engage with their contact and see how
they can take advantage of the virtual monetary credit program in exchange for
installing green roofs, as one month’s payment would nearly cover the costs of green
             roof installation without labor.
