FUTURE INITIATIVES
Benefits:
Reduces the prevalence of disease, water pollution, and flooding
Cleaner community & pride for residents
Increases other material recycling rates
Reduces the need for fossil-fuel-powered pickup in the favelas
Produces nutrient-rich organic fertilizers to be used in community gardens
Initial program costs are estimated to be around $16,000. Annual costs are expected to
be less as the program eventually evolves into a community program, and residents see
the value in collecting organic food waste to compost and use in community gardens.
Funding could be sourced from BrazilFoundation, a grantmaking organization with an
emphasis on social and environmental justice, discounts from Ciclo Orgânico, eventual
financing from the city of Niterói for community garden initiatives within the school, and
progress toward a sustainable energy project that uses organic material in biodigesters
to create gas for energy use.
